She raised a brow and said, “Meatless sausage?! What? How can that be, that’s an oxymoron!”
Well, I’m hear to tell you that it is possible and it’s DELICIOUS! The meatless sausage I used for this vegetarian pizza comes from a brand called Beyond Meat. You may have heard of them, but if you haven’t, they are definitely worth looking into. Give it a try. You WON’T be disappointed!
I used to buy their products way before I became vegetarian simply because it was just THAT good and it was nice to give my body a break from eating meat without giving up the savory taste that meat brings to the table. My favorite Beyond Meat products so far are the burger patties and their variety of sausages.
So! I have Beyond Meat sausages in my fridge and thought to myself, “What can I make with these sausages?”. I felt like getting creative in the kitchen and that is when the idea struck me, “Aha! Vegetarian Sausage Pizza!”. I have all the ingredients to make a pizza, so why not? I made a simple dough using almond flour and egg. Alternatively, you can use a vegan egg substitute as well as vegan cheese to make this a vegan pizza.
This recipe is for one small thin crust pizza. I’m not too keen on thick crusts. To me, it’s all about the toppings. The crust is just a vehicle to get the ingredients all packed up and ready for consumption.
Ingredients for the dough:
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
1 Egg (or equivalent egg substitute)
1 cup of Almond Flour (or enough flour until you have a dough-like consistency)
1 tps of Oregano
1 tps of Cumin
1 tps of Garlic Powder
Pinch of Salt
Mix all the ingredients together. Place a sheet of parchment paper on a sheet pan. Brush a little olive oil to the parchment paper. Place the dough on the parchment paper. Coat the back of a spoon with olive oil and use it to help spread the dough into a circle or shape of choice.
Place the dough in the oven for 10 minutes to help harden the crust a bit.
And now for the fun part, the toppings! Here is the list of ingredients I used. You may tailor to your liking.
1 Beyond Meat Spicy Italian Sausage
3/4 cup of Pasta Sauce
1/2 cup of Pepper Jack Cheese
Few strips of Green Bell Pepper
A few black and green olives
Red onion
You first want to cook the Beyond Meat Spicy Italian Sausage according to the direction on the packaging. Once done, cut into slices.
After taking the dough out of the oven, you’ll notice that it might still look a bit under done. That’s ok, you’ll be putting it back in the oven with the toppings where it will cook a bit more.
Time to start piling on the toppings! Pour the pasta sauce on the dough first, then all the other ingredients. Place everything back in the oven for another 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted.
Serve and enjoy!
